UNITED STATES

150 Afghans to be sent back home

The US plans to deport more than 150 Afghan immigrants back to Afghanistan via Pakistan, US media reported on Friday, and the first flight could leave as soon as Monday. US President Donald Trump last year issued travel bans for a number of countries, including Afghanistan, as part of a broad immigration crackdown, and sought to end deportation protections for Afghans, some of whom were granted special immigrant visas following the August 2021 takeover by Taliban authorities.

G20 meeting ends but no consensus reached

A two-day meeting of Group of 20 foreign ministers ended in Atlanta, in the US state of Georgia, on Saturday, without a joint communique, as participants failed to reach consensus on major global geopolitical and economic security issues. Participants remained deeply divided over issues including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the US-Iran conflict and US tariff policies. Several representatives said these issues had driven global fuel costs sharply higher and heightened uncertainty in global trade. Washington's decision not to invite South Africa, a G20 member that held the group's rotating presidency last year, also sparked divisions.

Intercommunal clashes leave 25 dead, 22 injured

At least 25 people were killed and 22 others injured in intercommunal clashes in a border area between Chad's western provinces of Hadjer-Lamis and Barh el Gazel, authorities said on Saturday. A total of 39 arrested people had been transferred to the capital for further judicial proceedings.

Memorial Mass held for train crash victims

Residents and local officials gathered on Saturday in a Spanish village near the site of a high-speed train collision that killed at least 69 people for a memorial Mass honoring the victims. Authorities have completed autopsies on people killed in the crash, with 56 identified so far. Wednesday's crash was Spain's second major train disaster this year. In January, 46 people were killed in another train disaster near the village of Adamuz.
