Carrick pushed closer to exit at Old Trafford following loss to Chelsea
Bleak outlook for embattled United boss, as team is left hovering above relegation zone
Michael Carrick's position as Manchester United manager was further plunged into jeopardy on Saturday after his side suffered a 2-0 loss at Chelsea in the Premier League, with a red card for the outspoken Lisandro Martinez adding to the woes of the beleaguered English giant.
Carrick was already under huge pressure — and seemingly operating on a match-by-match basis — heading into the game at Stamford Bridge, for which he restored Bruno Fernandes to the starting lineup after dropping his captain last week.
But, things are looking bleak for Carrick, with United now on a nine-match winless run in all competitions — its longest streak without a victory since 1988, according to the BBC — after second-half goals from Chelsea's Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer.
"Things have gone against us, and gone against us in a big way," Carrick said. "It unraveled quickly."
Palmer converted a 64th-minute penalty, awarded after Martinez jumped with a raised elbow toward Wesley Fofana at a corner and struck the Chelsea defender in the face. VAR confirmed the offense, and the Argentina defender, already in the spotlight for criticizing United's hierarchy in a recent post-match interview, was given a second yellow card in a four-minute span.
As Martinez walked off the field and down the tunnel, Carrick didn't even acknowledge the player.
"It has a major importance on the game," Carrick said of the sending-off. "A huge moment."
United has just one win in the league after nine games and is left sitting one place above the relegation zone courtesy of its goal difference over Crystal Palace, which also has just seven points — a desperate situation for one of the country's biggest clubs.
United's only two victories from 13 matches in all competitions this season were against newly promoted Ipswich in the Premier League and Champions League minnow Sabah.
United's next match is at home to Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday and there is doubt about whether Carrick will still be in charge.
"I'm just looking forward to getting the boys ready for midweek," he said. "I thought it was as good as we'd played for some time in the first half. We looked dangerous, we looked fluid, we looked like a good team."
"I think the mentality was there right from the first minute," United forward Bryan Mbeumo said.
"Maybe today we just missed some chances. We could have been up early in the game, but that's a positive to take out of this game."
Martinez back in spotlight
The match thrust Argentina international Martinez back into the spotlight again, this time for hotheadedness on the field, rather than off it.
Two weeks ago, he gave a post-match interview calling out United's hierarchy and questioning the club's summer recruitment. His latest misstep, though, came not long after being yellow-carded for pulling the jersey of Rogers.
Minutes later, Martinez struck Chelsea's Fofana in the face with his elbow while challenging for a corner.
After a video review, the referee awarded a second yellow card to the Argentine and, in the 63rd minute, he trudged off the field past an unacknowledging Carrick and down the tunnel.
Palmer converted the resulting penalty for Chelsea's second goal.
Martinez, who continues to be picked by Carrick despite his recent outburst, was also at least partially to blame for the first goal, scored by Rogers in the 50th minute, after failing to come across and make a challenge on the England midfielder as he surged into the penalty area.
Rogers, who credits Carrick for revitalizing his career during a spell together at Middlesbrough, dealt a potentially decisive blow to his former boss, dinking the ball over Senne Lammens.
Bournemouth wins again
Another win and another clean sheet for in-form Bournemouth.
By beating Leeds 2-0 thanks to goals by Evanilson and Amine Adli, Bournemouth made it six straight victories in all competitions without conceding a single goal and moved up to seventh place.
Tottenham was one place lower, but on the same points after beating 10-man Crystal Palace 2-0 for a third consecutive victory.
Palace played a man down from the 13th minute following a straight red card issued to Jean-Philippe Mateta for a studs-up tackle on Micky van de Ven, after which defenders Archie Gray and Jan Paul van Hecke scored.
Aston Villa squandered Nicolas Jackson's one-goal lead to draw with Fulham 1-1 after goalkeeper Zion Suzuki dropped an inswinging corner over his own goal line.
Sunderland stayed in last place after losing away to Coventry 3-1, next-to-last Nottingham Forest lost at Brentford 2-0, while promoted teams Hull and Ipswich played out a 2-2 draw.
