China respects the choice of the Brazilian people, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said on Tuesday, responding to US President Donald Trump's claim that Brazil's presidential election appeared to have been rigged.

Guo made the remarks at a regular news briefing when asked about Trump's questioning of the legitimacy of the election results.

Brazil's Superior Electoral Court declared incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva the winner of Sunday's runoff election.

China on Monday congratulated Lula on his reelection, with Guo expressing China's willingness to work with Brazil to further advance the building of a China-Brazil community with a shared future.
