China's triumphant triathletes return from Japan with landmark medal haul
The Chinese national triathlon team returned home in triumph from the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, bringing home two gold medals and two silver medals, marking a series of historic breakthroughs for the sport in China.
In the men's individual competition on Sept 20, Zhang Xirui claimed the team's first medal of the Games — a silver — a major breakthrough for China in the men's event.
On the same day, in the women's individual competition, Lin Xinyu won gold — China's first in the event since Doha 2006 — while Huang Anqi took silver, completing a Chinese one-two.
In the mixed relay, Lin, Huang, Zhang and Li Mingxu delivered a seamless performance to win the race with a 51-second margin, breaking Japan's 12-year grip on the event and denying the host a gold medal for the first time since the mixed relay was introduced at Incheon 2014.
From individual breakthroughs to team achievements, the Chinese triathletes withstood immense pressure to stand tall on the Asian stage, showcasing the nation's growing competitive strength in the discipline.
At a recent meet-and-greet held by the team's official sponsor, sportswear brand Descente, the quartet shared how they coped with the high-intensity of the continental competition, and how they achieved their landmark medal haul through teamwork.
"This mixed relay gold medal represents the rise of Chinese triathlon. For us, it is a new starting point, and this gold medal has also given Chinese triathletes greater confidence and resolve," said Lin.
In the triathlon, the battle isn't just between athletes and their rivals. As they switch between swimming, cycling, and running, they must combat physical exhaustion, shifting race conditions and psychological swings.
Athletes need to maintain clear judgment as their bodies approach their limits, control their pace and rhythm in fractions of a second and preserve an inner order that cannot be disrupted.
Offering training advice to amateur triathletes, Li produced a pair of small wooden sticks, saying that holding the sticks helps him reduce lateral sway during running and helps him keep his core engaged, even as his stamina declines.
During the event, the athletes joined the fans in attendance in a simulated triathlon training challenge.
Using resistance bikes and manual treadmills, the team demonstrated, in a shared activity alongside the fans, the numerous challenges a triathlon produces, as well the toll it takes on physical capacity, rhythm and willpower.
In conducting the interactive demo, the team hoped to encourage more sports enthusiasts to take on the challenge of the triathlon and push beyond their limits.
