Actions will help translate vision for Sino-US ties into reality: China Daily editorial

President Xi Jinping's ongoing state visit to the United States has drawn worldwide attention. The world is waiting to see how the most important bilateral relationship will evolve. Xi's remarks when meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Thursday have made China's position on this critical issue abundantly clear.

Xi and Trump agreed to work toward building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability in May. Since then, China and the US have worked together toward this direction with the strategic communication between Xi and Trump conducive to translating this vision into concrete actions.

The two sides need to work further toward a relationship featuring cooperation as the mainstay, moderate competition, manageable differences and promises of peace.

In the process, China and the US should, and fully can, achieve mutual benefit and win-win results through practical cooperation, help each other succeed through healthy competition, properly manage differences by seeking common ground while respecting differences, and build peace by fostering mutual trust.

The economic and trade consultations between the two sides provide a useful reference for the steady development of China-US relations in other fields. As long as the two sides uphold the spirit of equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit, a way out of problems can be found.

That the economic and trade teams of the two countries held a new round of consultations and reached a new joint arrangement effectively proves that.

As both major countries in artificial intelligence, China and the US have more reasons to cooperate in AI, leveraging their respective strengths in the sector rather than guarding against each other.

To that end, it is imperative the two countries work together to maintain human control over AI technologies, uphold a people-centered approach and the principle of using AI for good, and ensure that AI serves human progress. The two sides should therefore continue to engage in dialogue on AI, exchange views on its risks and benefits, and work together to prevent the misuse and abuse of AI.

A stable China-US economic and trade relationship requires both expanding the list of cooperation and shortening the list of problems. Cooperation is a two-way street. The two sides should work in the same direction, and stay committed to the principle of mutual benefit and win-win cooperation. The principle should no longer be tested for its validity through unilateral actions and measures.

Xi pointed out in his speech at the arrival ceremony at the White House, China and the US do not need to avoid mentioning competition, but the competition should be a healthy one and should be kept within bounds, adding that it should be a race of catching up with one another, not a wrestling match in which one either wins or loses.

In particular, the Taiwan question is the most important and sensitive issue in Sino-US relations. Xi stressed that the Chinese side's position on safeguarding national reunification and territorial integrity is clear-cut.

The US side should adhere to the correct position of opposing "Taiwan independence", and handle the Taiwan question with caution, so as to lay a solid foundation for China-US strategic cooperation and the development of bilateral relations.

The Chinese and US militaries should maintain regular dialogue and improve mechanisms for crisis communication and prevention. That is of practical importance for the two sides to avoid misjudgment so as to help them overcome the Thucydides Trap.

The two leaders encouraged bilateral exchanges across different sectors. Notably, Xi announced an invitation for 100,000 young Americans to visit China for exchanges and study in the coming five years. That shows the two sides' commitment to steering bilateral ties toward sustainability and stability.

The development of bilateral ties since the 1970s clearly shows that as long as China and the US hold the line of no conflict and no confrontation, they can better create the space and use their wisdom and capacity to find the right path to get along on this planet they both call home.
