Sinotruk drives electric truck innovation

China National Heavy Duty Truck Group, also known as Sinotruk, brought five Sitrak models, smart equipment and an integrated energy ecosystem to the 72nd IAA Transportation in Hanover, Germany, last week, using the global stage to showcase China's advances in commercial vehicle electrification, intelligent driving and life cycle value.

Under the theme "Powering All, Delivering One", the display also underscored China's high-end manufacturing capabilities and growing strength in international markets.

The centerpiece was the new-generation Sitrak 4x2 battery-electric tractor truck. Rather than simply replacing diesel with batteries, Sinotruk said the vehicle was engineered to address three pain points that have long constrained electric heavy-duty trucks worldwide: insufficient range, slow recharging and reduced payload capacity.

It runs on the company's next-generation new-energy power system, built around a 600-kilowatt-hour battery pack, among the largest in its class, that delivers more than 500 kilometers on a single charge. With megawatt-level charging, the battery can be charged from 20 percent to 80 percent capacity in 23 minutes.

A low-drag design, combined with energy management and regenerative braking, holds consumption to 1.1 kWh per km. The truck has a curb weight of just 10.1 metric tons and a maximum gross combination weight of 44 tons, leaving more room for payload and, in turn, higher earnings for operators.

It is also equipped with a Level 2+advanced driver-assistance system covering intelligent speed control, automated lane changing and overtaking, obstacle avoidance and ramp navigation. The system can be used in more than 90 percent of highway driving scenarios, significantly reducing drivers' workloads.

In Sinotruk's view, an electric truck is not a standalone product; the energy ecosystem behind it is the complete solution. On the show floor, a scale model of an integrated wind-solar-storage-charging-swap station, supported by a dynamic demonstration system, illustrated how the company's smart recharging logic works from end to end.

Built around a smart microgrid, the station combines wind and solar power, diesel generation and the public grid, and is fitted with large-capacity energy-storage cabinets. It runs in both grid-connected and off-grid modes: when connected, it works in coordination with the wider grid, and when operating independently, it can serve ports, mining sites and remote industrial parks with weak or no grid access.

The company also offers products such as mobile charging trucks for off-grid field operations lacking power supply or infrastructure.

Providing charging infrastructure alongside vehicles marks Sinotruk's expansion from vehicle supply into energy infrastructure and the development of a full-chain service system for zero-carbon transport capacity.

Supporting these offerings is a global service network. Sinotruk products are now sold in more than 150 countries and regions. The company operates 37 knockdown assembly plants, more than 1,000 overseas service outlets and more than 40 international training centers.

Its overseas central warehouses hold $105 million worth of new-energy spare parts, while more than 300 electric vehicle technicians provide on-site support in overseas markets.

Sinotruk has expanded beyond the traditional model of exporting vehicles alone to provide technology, services, branding and energy solutions overseas. This transition is underpinned by decades of independent research and development and manufacturing expertise.

Founded in 1930, Sinotruk was tasked from the outset with filling the gap in China's heavy-duty truck industry and revitalizing the nation's automotive sector. It built the Huanghe JN150, China's first domestically produced heavy-duty truck, which helped reduce the country's reliance on imported vehicles.

The Hanover show is the latest demonstration of Sinotruk's capabilities before an international audience and another step in its effort to bring Chinese smart-manufacturing solutions to the world's green transition.
