The 1.02-square-kilometer historic quarter features Chinese and Western architectural influences, including former educational, medical and religious institutions. Restoration follows a minimum-intervention approach, supported by laser scanning and digital modeling to guide repairs.

A network of 16 street museums has been established in historic buildings and sites. The latest major phase of the core cultural precinct opened in March 2024, and the 37,000-square-meter area now houses 74 businesses at about 90 percent occupancy. Forty of those tenants are cultural and creative businesses, while others include restaurants, cafes, accommodation providers and offices.
