Trade expert: China's subsidies 'unfair'? Let the WTO decide

As the West repeatedly accuses China of "overcapacity", Tu Xinquan, dean of the China Institute for WTO Studies at the University of International Business and Economics, told China Daily's Dialogues with Thinkers that extending subsidies in the initial stages of developing clean energy is a common practice worldwide, including in China.

As a member of the World Trade Organization, China has strictly complied with the relevant rules, and if some countries have concerns, they should present evidence and raise it within the WTO framework — not resort to unilateral accusations. If the WTO rules need updating, then that can be negotiated; but until then, the rules must be respected.

Tu stressed that the authority of international law cannot be selectively ignored, and no country should break rules simply because it dislikes them. At stake is not just fair competition, but the shared future of global green transition.
