Shunyi culture and theatre festivals open in Beijing

The third Shun Yi · Yi Yun Chao Bai Cultural Festival and Shun Yi · Chao Bai Yi Ju Theatre Festival opened Friday at the Shunyi Grand Theatre, kicking off an extensive lineup of performing arts tailored for the autumn and winter seasons.

Centered primarily on drama, the cultural season features 35 distinct productions spanning 42 performances. To engage audiences of all ages and backgrounds, the program is divided into five thematic sections encompassing classic plays, family productions, original works, literary adaptations, filmed theater, traditional Chinese arts, concerts, and stand-up comedy.

The opening night featured a family comedy centered on domestic life, suitable for multi-generational audiences. Shunyi also serves as the inaugural stop for the production's 2026 national tour.

As the core component of the seasonal lineup, the theatre festival highlights literary adaptations and original stage works. A major centerpiece is Lao She's classic play Rickshaw Boy, which examines the social realities of ordinary citizens in old Beijing. Additionally, the festival introduces a digital screening initiative featuring high-definition recordings of major stage works from the National Theatre of China, expanding local access to top-tier productions.

Traditional Chinese performing arts maintain a strong presence, with performances by leading national troupes covering Peking Opera, Hebei Bangzi opera, ballet, chamber music, and piano recitals. A dedicated series featuring poetry recitation, folk arts, crosstalk, and traditional instrumental music further showcases the breadth of China's theatrical heritage.

Complementing the classical and dramatic offerings are contemporary programs including stand-up comedy, popular music concerts, and interactive family shows. Organizers noted that the comprehensive initiative is designed to integrate the performing arts more deeply into the daily lives of local residents while expanding Shunyi's cultural vitality.
