Voters reject restarting of EU accession talks
Icelanders voted against resuming negotiations on the country's accession to the European Union in a referendum held on Saturday, with 52.8 percent voting "no" and 47.2 percent "yes," public broadcaster RUV reported Sunday. Turnout reached 82.5 percent, with 225,031 votes cast. Iceland applied for EU membership in 2009, while accession talks were suspended in 2013 after a eurosceptic government took office. Following the rejection, Iceland's relationship with the EU will continue largely through the European Economic Area and Schengen frameworks.
