BEIJING -- Global index provider MSCI on Wednesday unveiled the results of its August 2026 index review, adding 33 Chinese companies, including Zhipu AI, to the MSCI China Index.

Zhipu AI, a Beijing-based leading Chinese AI model firm, was among the three largest additions to the MSCI Emerging Markets Index by full company market capitalization, underscoring global index funds' growing interest in China's AI sector.

The changes will take effect after the market close on Aug 31. The MSCI China Index is nested in the MSCI Emerging Markets Index and the broader MSCI global standard index series, prompting global passive funds that follow these benchmarks to buy the newly included stocks.

The 33 additions to the MSCI China Index include 31 A-share companies such as protective components supplier Guangdong Fenghua Advanced Technology Holdings, and semiconductor equipment firm Kingsemi, alongside Hong Kong-listed Zhipu AI and Kingboard Holdings.

The index provider also removed 32 Chinese stocks from the index.

Analysts said the inclusion reflects the rising influence of Chinese tech and hard-tech firms in global benchmarks, as foreign capital continues to increase exposure to Chinese assets.

Passive funds tracking MSCI indexes are expected to rebalance their portfolios on Aug 31, the effective date of the changes.
