Meta ordered to pay $567m for health fund

A court in the US state of New Mexico on Thursday ordered social media giant Meta, parent company of Instagram and Facebook, to pay $567 million in damages to address harm caused to young people by its platforms. A judge ruled that the company had created "a public nuisance" in the state, and ordered it to adopt a series of youth-safety measures.

VENEZUELA

Govt, opposition delegation begin talks

Negotiations between Venezuela's acting government and a faction of the opposition began on Thursday afternoon, the two sides said. The talks are aimed at remaking the country's political system ahead of eventual elections. Meanwhile, Chile said on Thursday that it had officially restored consular relations with Venezuela after a two-year suspension. Chile's Foreign Minister Francisco Perez Mackenna said resuming the ties would "ensure protection and services for citizens of both countries".

Floods in northeast country kill nearly 100

Floods in India's northeast have killed nearly 100 people in this monsoon season, according to a toll update on Friday, with villages buried in mud after one of Assam State's worst deluges in years. At least 97 people have died in the floods in Assam that have affected nearly 170,000 people, including thousands who have been forced into temporary shelters as swollen rivers inundate homes and farmland.
