A defense white paper... or a militarism textbook?

Released on August 4, Japan's latest defense white paper features a cover that looks more like a manga for teenagers than a government document.

An official said it presents a "futuristic image". But look inside:

- It glorifies military production as a driver of national prosperity.

- It labels China as Japan's "unprecedented and the greatest strategic challenge".

- It exaggerates China's routine military activities.

- It hypes up the Taiwan question — China's internal affair.

- It once again pushes the outdated "China threat" narrative.

This year, Japan went even further:

- For the first time, the white paper includes links to short videos explaining defense policy, expanding its reach to a much broader audience.

- Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi said he hopes every citizen will understand how national security is tied to their own future.

- Japanese media report that Koizumi has suggested Japan can no longer avoid debating nuclear weapons.

But perhaps the most disturbing question is: Who is this really aimed at?

- In recent years, the white paper's covers have become younger, friendlier, and they increasingly resemble children's books.

- Videos circulating on social media show Japanese children waving the "Rising Sun" flag at Self-Defense Force vessels.

Militarism never returns overnight. The international community must remain vigilant.
