Landmark green energy shipment by Chinese firm
China's green fuel sector achieved a historic milestone last week as a vessel carrying 3,750 metric tons of green ammonia set sail from Lianyungang Port in East China's Jiangsu province bound for South Korea, marking the nation's largest single-batch export of the zero-carbon energy to date.
Produced by State Power Investment Corp, the shipment represents the first time Chinese green fuel has gained international market recognition based on its full lifecycle carbon reduction contributions.
The delivery signifies that China's entire wind-solar-hydrogen-ammonia industrial chain has officially upgraded from technical demonstration to large-scale international commercial delivery, the company said.
Completed and commissioned in July 2025, the green energy-producing facility is supported by 800,000 kilowatts of installed renewable energy capacity. It stands as the world's largest single-unit green ammonia plant with an annual output capacity of 32,000 tons of green hydrogen and 180,000 tons of green ammonia, it said.
Long utilized as a vital component in fertilizers, ammonia is now gaining traction as a viable low-carbon fuel for the shipping industry. However, conventional ammonia is largely produced using coal and natural gas, which fails to take advantage of its green-energy potential.
Meanwhile, green ammonia — made using renewable power — offers a zero-carbon alternative, but its growth has been hampered by high technology costs and a spatial gap between where renewable energy is generated and where fuel demand is located.
Industry experts believe that through proprietary core technologies and authoritative international certifications, Chinese-made green ammonia products are now officially becoming deeply embedded in the global green fuel supply chain.
"The expansion from technical demonstration to commercial export, and from product supply to standard-setting, demonstrates that this 3,750-ton export shipment does not merely represent a cross-border delivery of green fuel," said Lin Boqiang, director of the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University.
"The international market's endorsement of Chinese products based on their lifecycle carbon reduction fully demonstrates the core global competitiveness of China's clean energy capabilities, industrial standards and development paradigms."
Lin said the country's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality before 2060 is driving growing momentum around low-carbon ammonia, particularly through pilot projects targeted at supplying green fuel to the shipping sector.
Producing and consuming roughly one-third of the world's ammonia supply — and home to some of the globe's busiest ports and shipping corridors — China is uniquely positioned to lead the deployment of clean marine fuels, he added.
Its independently developed "green power-hydrogen-ammonia" flexible coordinated control system has successfully tackled a major global technical challenge — namely, reconciling the intermittent and fluctuating nature of wind and solar power with the continuous stability required for the production of green chemicals.
State Power Investment Corp said that compared with traditional coal-based synthetic ammonia produced in China, the 3,750 tons of green ammonia bound for South Korea will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 10,000 tons across its entire lifecycle — an environmental benefit equivalent to the annual carbon absorption of approximately 1 million trees.
The shipment comes as global demand for traceable and verifiable green fuels continues to climb.
Possessing a dual identity as both a clean fuel and a green industrial feedstock, green ammonia is rapidly becoming a vital commodity in the global low-carbon transition, the company added.
