AMEC targets global expansion, eyes 60% coverage of high-end semiconductor equipment

Chinese semiconductor equipment maker Advanced Micro-Fabrication Equipment Inc aims to cover more than 60 percent of high-end semiconductor equipment categories within five years, chairman Yin Zhiyao said.

The ambition highlighted China's efforts to strengthen its domestic semiconductor supply chain and reduce reliance on overseas equipment suppliers amid intensifying global competition in advanced chip technologies.

At the opening ceremony of the company's new headquarters in Shanghai's Lingang area on Saturday, Yin said within five years, through a combination of in-house development and strategic acquisitions, AMEC aims to cover more than 100 types of high-end semiconductor equipment.

"The company's long-term goal is to become a global first-tier semiconductor equipment supplier by 2035 in terms of scale, product competitiveness and customer satisfaction," he said.

AMEC has developed 54 types of high-end semiconductor equipment, including 26 plasma etching systems, 24 thin-film deposition, chemical mechanical polishing and metrology tools.

The company's etching and thin-film technologies have reached atomic-level precision, while more than 8,800 process chambers developed by AMEC have been deployed across over 220 production lines worldwide as of the end of June 2026, Yin added.

Founded in 2004, AMEC has become one of China's leading semiconductor equipment manufacturers, with its plasma etching systems used in advanced chip manufacturing processes. Etching equipment is a critical tool used to carve microscopic patterns on silicon wafers, alongside other key manufacturing steps such as lithography and deposition.

The company has maintained average annual sales growth of more than 35 percent for 14 consecutive years since 2012. Its per-employee annual sales have reached around 4.55 million yuan ($630,000), a level comparable with leading global semiconductor equipment companies, he said.

Total factory and research space is expected to expand from the current 600,000 square meters to 900,000 square meters within about five years, with annual production capacity projected to exceed 70 billion yuan, Yin added.
