CGN's innovative 200-megawatt offshore solar facility connects to grid
China General Nuclear Power Corporation announced that its 200-megawatt offshore solar project in Ningde, Fujian province, achieved full-capacity grid connection on Friday.
As one of the first offshore photovoltaic projects in Fujian and CGN's first endeavor to co-locate nuclear and solar power generation, the facility serves as a key demonstration for advancing the local green energy transition and building a new energy system.
The 200 MW project is equipped with a 20 MW/40 MWh energy storage system. Over its 25-year operational lifespan, the facility is expected to generate about 300 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually. This output will save roughly 91,300 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 198,000 tons each year, CGN said.
Power from the facility is routed through a newly built 12-kilometer, 220-kilovolt transmission line, which serves as a crucial hub for electricity export, it said.
"During construction, we tackled industry-wide challenges such as complex offshore conditions, the vulnerability of traditional all-steel supports to corrosion, and high construction and maintenance costs," Wu Cheng'en, a manager at the engineering management department of CGN New Energy's Fujian branch, said.
"Through technical breakthroughs, CGN effectively enhanced pile-bearing capacity and long-term anti-corrosion durability, cutting overall bracket construction costs by more than 10 percent. This has resulted in a replicable and scalable technological solution for independent offshore solar development," Wu added.
By maximizing the intensive, three-dimensional use of marine resources, the Ningde project explores a new path for complementary nuclear and solar power generation.
Moving forward, CGN stated it will continue to deepen its multi-energy integration of nuclear, wind, solar, and energy storage, contributing the "CGN solution" to China's dual-carbon goals and the construction of a modern energy system.
