A 1,300-kilometer highway connecting Beijing and Shanghai is becoming an unlikely new benchmark for China's electric vehicle industry.
The G2 Beijing-Shanghai Expressway, one of China's major transportation arteries, has increasingly become a testing ground to demonstrate the real-world range performance of electric vehicles.
There is no official certification behind the route. However, through repeated challenges by automakers and media organizations, the highway has gradually emerged as a benchmark for measuring how far electric vehicles can travel in real-world conditions.
Similar to how Germany's Nurburgring has become a symbol of performance testing for traditional automobiles, the Beijing-Shanghai route is emerging as a "range track" for China's rapidly expanding new energy vehicle sector.
The rise of the route reflects a broader transformation in China's EV market: as technology advances and competition intensifies, consumers and manufacturers are paying increasing attention to actual driving performance rather than laboratory figures alone.
Before 2025, long-distance EV tests between Beijing and Shanghai were mainly carried out by automotive bloggers and enthusiasts. These attempts attracted some attention, but remained fragmented and had yet to become an industry-wide phenomenon.
The trend began to accelerate when automakers started participating.
In April 2025, Exeed's Exlantix ES extended-range electric sedan undertook a manufacturer-led, livestreamed Beijing-Shanghai range challenge.
The test drew industry attention by demonstrating the vehicle's performance in a real highway environment and showed the potential of the route as a new form of product validation.
The trend reached a turning point in April 2026, when Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun brought the Beijing-Shanghai range challenge into the spotlight with a high-profile livestream of the new Xiaomi SU7 Pro sedan.
During the 15-hour livestream, Lei personally followed the vehicle's journey from Beijing to Shanghai.
The vehicle covered approximately 1,313 kilometers with only one charging stop, attracting millions of views online and generating widespread discussion among Chinese consumers.
More importantly, the livestream changed the scale of the conversation. A route that had previously been followed mainly by automotive enthusiasts and industry observers became a mainstream topic, with "one-charge Beijing-to-Shanghai driving" emerging as a new symbol of EV endurance.
Following Xiaomi, more automakers and automotive media organizations began conducting similar tests along the same route.
Li Auto, Voyah and other brands joined the trend, while media platforms launched multi-model comparisons to evaluate different vehicles under identical conditions.
Gradually, the Beijing-Shanghai challenge evolved from a marketing event into a widely recognized way of demonstrating EV capability.
The reason the route has gained such influence is closely linked to consumer concerns over real-world range.
For years, the gap between official range figures and actual driving conditions has been one of the biggest concerns for potential EV buyers.
Most Chinese electric vehicles use China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle range figures, measured under standardized testing conditions.
However, highway driving at high speeds often results in significantly higher energy consumption due to factors such as increased aerodynamic drag and changes in battery efficiency.
Industry experience shows that many mainstream EV models can achieve only around 60 to 70 percent of their CLTC range when driven at highway speeds of around 120 kilometers per hour.
For consumers planning long-distance trips, performance on an actual highway is often more meaningful than a number listed in a brochure. The Beijing-Shanghai Expressway provides a particularly valuable testing environment because it combines distance, speed and practical relevance, said analysts.
At around 1,300 kilometers, the journey represents a major challenge for battery electric vehicles. It is long enough to test energy efficiency, charging capability and thermal management, while still reflecting realistic intercity travel scenarios.
For extended-range and plug-in hybrid vehicles, the route provides another type of challenge: demonstrating their ability to complete long-distance journeys with limited or no additional energy replenishment.
The route is also highly representative because Beijing and Shanghai are among China's most important economic centers.
The corridor between the two cities represents frequent business, family and commercial travel, making the results easier for consumers to understand and relate to their own driving needs.
The growing popularity of Beijing-Shanghai range tests also reflects a shift in EV marketing strategies.

The participation of company executives has further increased public attention, turning these tests into both engineering demonstrations and confidence statements.
Meanwhile, the scope of testing is expanding. What began as a simple range challenge has developed into a comprehensive evaluation of long-distance driving capability, covering charging speed, energy efficiency, intelligent driving functions and overall travel experience.
The participating vehicles have also expanded beyond sedans to include SUVs, extended-range models and MPVs, showing that the Beijing-Shanghai route is becoming relevant across different segments of China's EV market.
The highway is not an officially designated testing facility, but repeated real-world challenges have increased its influence.
What started as scattered individual experiments has gradually evolved into a recognizable industry practice — a Chinese version of real-world EV range testing.
The Beijing-Shanghai Expressway is more than a road connecting two major cities. It has become a symbol of China's transition in EV competition: from a race based on numbers and specifications to a competition built around real-world experience and consumer trust.
