China voices serious concern over France's anti-fast-fashion law

China has expressed serious concern over France's newly adopted anti-fast-fashion law, with a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce saying the legislation imposes discriminatory restrictions on Chinese cross-border e-commerce platforms, distorts fair competition and constitutes a trade barrier against China.

Responding to a media inquiry on Wednesday, the official urged France to abide by World Trade Organization rules, immediately correct the discriminatory measures and provide Chinese companies with a fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment, according to a statement issued by the ministry.

The spokesperson said China will closely monitor the formulation and enforcement of the law's implementing rules, warning that the country will take necessary measures if the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies are harmed.

According to the statement, the French law targets Chinese cross-border e-commerce platforms under the guise of promoting environmental protection and sustainable development, while in practice introducing exclusionary measures.

The spokesperson said such actions are suspected of violating the WTO's principle of non-discrimination and run counter to France's long-standing commitment to fair competition and free trade. The measures will not only undermine the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, but also harm the interests of French consumers.
