China said on Friday that the growing preference among Chinese consumers for green products reflects the fact that low-carbon and environmentally friendly lifestyles have become part of everyday life in the country.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning made the remarks on World Environment Day in response to media reports that Chinese importers are increasingly choosing green-certified products in global agricultural trade, while Chinese consumers are no longer focused only on low prices and are more willing to pay for green products that do not come at the cost of deforestation.

Some commentators have said the rise of green consumption in China will help foster a more inclusive global green supply chain.

More and more Chinese consumers are choosing green products, Mao said, adding that low-carbon and environmentally friendly ways of life have been integrated into what people wear, eat, use and how they travel.

With more than 1.4 billion Chinese people embracing environmental protection and taking green action, this in itself is the most direct support for global environmental protection, she said.

China will continue to follow a path that prioritizes ecological conservation and green development, promote global sustainable development through concrete actions, and work with all countries to build a cleaner and more beautiful world, Mao added.
