China urges Paraguay to make right choice on Taiwan question
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian urged Paraguay on Thursday to stand on the right side of history and make the right choice of recognizing the one-China principle, as the South American country's President Santiago Pena visited Taiwan with a delegation of business leaders and reaffirmed ties with the island.
Lin said the one-China principle is a basic norm governing international relations and a prevailing consensus in the international community.
A total of 183 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of this principle, he said.
"We urge the Paraguayan authorities to stand on the right side of history at an early date and make the right choice of recognizing the one-China principle and severing the so-called 'diplomatic relations' with the Taiwan authorities," Lin said.
