6 killed, 14 injured in Kyiv shooting

KYIV — Eight people, including one child, remain hospitalized in Kyiv after being wounded in a shooting that killed six people, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Sunday.

Fourteen people were injured after a man opened fire on the streets of the Ukrainian capital on Saturday, according to media reports.

Earlier in the day, a gunman opened fire at pedestrians in Kyiv's southern Holosiivsky district. Following the shooting, the attacker held people hostage in a nearby supermarket, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said.

He added that the attacker was killed during an arrest attempt.

Ukraine's Prosecutor General's Office said the attacker was a 58-year-old man.

Klitschko said the wounded child, whose parents were killed in the shooting, was in moderate condition, while one of the adults was in critical condition.

"They are all receiving necessary medical care," the mayor said on Telegram.

The supermarket has been cordoned off and remains closed. Bullet holes are visible in the windows of the supermarket.

Flowers were left near a residential building in respect of those killed in the shooting.

The Security Service of Ukraine, or SSU, said on Saturday that it is considering the shooting in Kyiv as a terror act, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported.

"Investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine have classified the shooting of civilians and the taking of hostages in the Holosiivsky district of Kyiv as a terrorist act," the SSU said in a statement.

The motive behind the incident was being investigated.
