China said on Monday that talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad marked a step toward easing tensions in the region.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun made the remarks at a regular news briefing when asked about reports that the United States and Iran had ended talks without an agreement and traded accusations against each other.

China hopes the relevant parties will abide by the temporary ceasefire agreement, remain committed to resolving disputes through political and diplomatic means, and avoid a renewed outbreak of fighting, Guo said.

He said such efforts are essential to creating the conditions for an early restoration of peace and stability in the Gulf region.
