Students participate in a watermelon-eating contest on Aug 5, 2025 at a primary school in Hefei, Anhui province. The event preceded the arrival of li qiu, or Start of Autumn, the 13th solar term in the traditional Chinese calendar, which falls on Aug 7, 2025. Known as ken qiu, meaning "biting into autumn", the activity is a Chinese tradition marking li qiu that involves enjoying fruits and vegetables, particularly watermelon, to prepare for the cooler weather and to help one's body adjust to the seasonal change.
