Beijing show to mark upcoming holidays
Beijing is set to host a spectacular lantern show in celebration of the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday. The show, which will feature over 200 creative lantern sets and approximately 100,000 colorful decorations, will be held at the Beijing Garden Expo Park from Sept 14 to Oct 31, Beijing Tourism Group announced on Saturday. The custom of attending lantern fairs during festivals is a time-honored tradition in Chinese culture. The intricate lanterns that will feature in the show are from Zigong, a city in Sichuan province renowned for its lantern-making history. Shen Hongyue, president of Zigong's lantern industry association, said its lantern show has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage, and what makes the upcoming show in the nation's capital special is its blending of Zigong's traditional lantern artistry with Beijing's rich cultural heritage.
Disaster relief funds allocated for Liaoning
The ministries of finance and emergency management have allocated 50 million yuan ($7 million) to support flood relief efforts in Liaoning province. The funds will be used for key emergency measures, including search and rescue operations, the relocation and resettlement of affected residents, and the mitigation of flood-related risks. In addition, relief funds will support efforts to identify potential secondary disaster risks and repair damaged homes to minimize losses caused by the floods. China has activated a level-IV disaster relief emergency response in Liaoning following rain-triggered floods.
