1 dead, 60 injured after escalator malfunctions
An escalator for tourists observing the Detian Waterfall in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region malfunctioned on Saturday, leaving one person dead and 60 others injured, according to authorities in the city of Chongzuo. The incident happened at 1:56 pm at the scenic spot, which straddles China and Vietnam and is the biggest cross-border waterfall in Asia. The injured were immediately sent to hospital. One is in severe condition, while the others sustained slight injuries. Since the incident, the escalator dubbed the "Magic Carpet Project" has halted operations. The cause of the malfunction is under investigation.
Shanghai launches its first intl cruise festival
Shanghai launched its first International Cruise Festival on Saturday to take advantage of China's cruise travel boom. The festival, which will run through Aug 31, will see a slew of new product launches related to the cruise economy as well as cruise business promotion activities. Liu Ping, deputy secretary-general of the Shanghai municipal government, said at the festival's opening ceremony that the cruise industry is key in efforts to meet increasing domestic travel demand, unleash consumption potential and promote high-level opening-up.
Railway back on track after flood disruption
The Baoji-Chengdu Railway, a key railway line in western China, resumed operations on Saturday after 25 days of disruption due to flood-triggered geological disasters. More than 70 disasters occurred on various sections of the railway, which links the city of Baoji in Shaanxi province with Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, on July 16 and 17 after heavy rainstorms lashed Baoji. The Anhe Bridge, a section of the railway, was brought down by floodwaters on July 17. Following the disasters, all train services on the railway were canceled or diverted to other routes.
Disneyland welcomes first big Marvel ride
Shanghai Disneyland will introduce a new Spider-Man-themed roller coaster, its first major attraction that will tell a Marvel story, Shanghai Disney Resort said on Sunday. The high-speed, immersive ride incorporates elements of Spider-Man, one of the most popular Marvel superheroes, according to Josh D'Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences, who made the announcement during Disney's global fan expo. The attraction is the latest expansion of the Shanghai Disney Resort. In December, the resort unveiled the world's first Zootopia area, and expansion projects also include a third Disney-themed hotel.
