Efforts urged to promote people's congress system

Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislative body, has called for efforts to promote the people's congress system and develop whole-process people's democracy to serve the fundamental interests of the people.

Zhao made the remarks during an inspection tour in Hebei province from Sunday to Tuesday.

Noting that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the National People's Congress, he emphasized the need to systematically summarize the historical significance and advantages of the people's congress system, firm up confidence in the system, and effectively carry out people's congress work in the new era with high quality.

Consultations held on socialist market economy

The seventh meeting of the Standing Committee of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, China's top political advisory body, opened in Beijing on Tuesday, with the political advisers holding consultations on building a high-level socialist market economy.

While presiding over the opening session, Wang Huning, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, called on national political advisers to provide suggestions and engage in broad political consultations and deliberations on the building of a high-level socialist market economy, in order to contribute more wisdom and strength to advancing national rejuvenation through the path toward Chinese modernization.

Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang, who attended the meeting upon invitation and delivered a report, underlined the need to promote reforms to build up a high-level socialist market economy.

He also called for actively aligning with high-standard international economic and trade rules, steadily expanding institutional opening-up, and nurturing new advantages in international economic cooperation and competition.
