House collapse kills two in Zhejiang

Two people were killed when a house partly collapsed in Zhejiang province, while another person was injured and is undergoing medical treatment, local authorities said on Sunday. According to the information office of the Wencheng county government, the collapse took place at about 7:20 pm on Saturday, leaving three people trapped. About 20 minutes later, rescuers managed to extract one of the victims and rushed the victim to the hospital. The other two were found at 2:30 am on Sunday and were confirmed dead. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

4 missing after ground caves in

Four people are missing following a ground collapse at a mined-out section in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, local authorities said Saturday morning. The incident occurred at around 7:45 pm Friday during filling operations at a mined-out area managed by the Jinyuan mining company in Linxi county, Chifeng, the city's emergency management bureau said. Rescue operations are underway.

445 ancient tombs excavated in Shanxi

A total of 445 tombs dating back more than 2,000 years have been excavated in North China's Shanxi province, providing valuable data for the study of funerals and other practices of that era, according to local archaeological authorities. The tombs, from the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), were found about 500 meters north of Xuezhuang village in the city of Linfen. Excavation work, led by the Shanxi provincial institute of archaeology, has been carried out for more than a year. Duan Shuanglong, a researcher with the institute, said the tombs are small or medium sized, with more than 700 pieces of cultural relics unearthed, including bronze ware, iron utensils, pottery, jade and bone articles.

Deputy tobacco chief under investigation

Xu Ying, deputy head of China's State Tobacco Monopoly Administration, also known as China Tobacco, is being investigated on suspicion of severely violating Party disciplines and national laws, the country's top anti-corruption authorities said on Saturday. The probe was disclosed by the Communist Party of China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision on their website. Xu, 59, started his career in the administration in 1988 and has worked for China Tobacco since then. He became its deputy head in March 2014.
