Premier calls to boost safety in new year
Premier Li Qiang called on Friday for concrete steps to curb the occurrences of various accidents to protect the safety of people's lives and property and maintain social stability to ensure that the people can have a happy Spring Festival. Li made the remarks at a national teleconference on workplace safety held by the State Council, China's Cabinet. Addressing the meeting, Li pointed out that in recent days, multiple workplace accidents have occurred in many places, causing significant casualties. He urged steps be taken to comprehensively carry out a large-scale investigation of the potential risks in workplace safety across the country and coordinate efforts in disaster prevention, reduction and relief.
Former sports official charged with bribery
Du Zhaocai, former deputy head of the General Administration of Sport of China, faces prosecution for alleged bribery, the Communist Party of China Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Commission of Supervision, China's top anti-corruption bodies, said in an online statement released on Friday. According to the indictment, Du abused his positions to facilitate others' gains and received substantial sums in return. Du, 63, was put under investigation in April.
