US urged to collaborate more in the field of AI

As a leading nation in the field of artificial intelligence, the United States should adopt a more open approach and strengthen AI cooperation with developing countries, including China, to take the lead in international cooperation on AI security and risk prevention, experts said.

US President Donald Trump announced on Sunday a new federal task force to coordinate the government's efforts in the area of artificial intelligence.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said the task force, named the "Super Intelligence Force", will coordinate federal efforts to ensure that the US continues to lead the world in AI.

The announcement followed a White House meeting on Sept 29 between Trump and executives of major AI companies, who signed a voluntary accord calling for stronger internal controls and reviews of AI models.

On the same day, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use the terms "Super Intelligence" and "SI" instead of "Artificial Intelligence" and "AI", a White House fact sheet stated.

A recent Bloomberg report said the performance gap between the US and Chinese AI companies had narrowed sharply in recent months, reaching a record low as Chinese labs gained ground. Top Chinese models lag their US rivals by just 3 percent on benchmark scores after the September release of DeepSeek's V4.1 Flash, Bloomberg Intelligence's senior analyst Robert Lea wrote in a report.

That is down from about 9 percent in May and 15 percent earlier in the year. The improving performance spells further market share gains for Chinese contenders, he said.

On Sept 29, Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng told Newsweek that in recent years, Chinese large AI models such as Deepseek, Seedance and Kimi have evolved and gained international popularity. Global downloads of the models have exceeded 10 billion.

He said that facts have proven that open source and openness do not create insecurity, rather, technological decoupling, enclosure and self-isolation are the real recipes for risk. Xie said that China has maintained that technology should be people-centered and developed for the positive and good, to serve the progress of humanity.

As leading nations in AI, China and the US share a special responsibility and need to jointly install guardrails and brakes, rather than engage in an arms race or draw down the iron curtain, he added.

Sean Stein, president of the US-China Business Council, said that as the world's two most technologically advanced countries, closer US-China cooperation on AI safety could become a critical stabilizing force in bilateral relations.

He said bilateral cooperation in AI security is where the two tech powers can have a meaningful conversation, because both countries have got a definite interest in preventing hackers from manipulating AI.

Shakeel Ahmad Ramay, CEO of the Asian Institute of Eco-Civilization Research and Development in Pakistan, said that China is seeking to develop AI not as an instrument of hegemony but as a source of win-win cooperation.
