Getting back in the saddle

Yang Yuxia, 53, led the team this time. "During the first seven days, we rode eastward, braving the wind and rain due to the influence of typhoons, often ending up completely drenched," she explained. "In the following days, we faced scorching sun and, after entering Fuzhou, encountered a lot of mountainous terrain that required us to climb steep slopes. The process was incredibly grueling."
After their arrival in Hangzhou on Sept 18, they went for a scenic ride around West Lake. "There are numerous charming little bridges there, making the cycling experience truly enjoyable," she recalled.
"The entire city is clean and well-kept, with convenient public facilities. Elements related to the Asian Games can be seen everywhere in the city, creating a vibrant atmosphere on every street and corner," Yang said.
The Guangzhou Dream Cycling Team has a history of participating in major sporting events.
Guo Daoning, the team's chief leader, said that this journey marks the third such ride, following their adventures during the 2014 Incheon Games in the Republic of Korea and the 2018 Jakarta Games in Indonesia.
Notably, back in 2012, he registered for a 3,000-kilometer cycling event that started in Rome, Italy, and concluded in London, United Kingdom, celebrating the opening of the London Olympics. This feat earned him an opportunity to meet Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee.
At the age of 77, Guo maintains remarkable vitality. He has even taken it upon himself to learn English, and is able to confidently engage in conversations in the language.
He and his teammates are eagerly looking forward to savoring the competition in Hangzhou and immersing themselves in the diverse and thrilling sporting events on offer.
