In 1980, a replica of the ancient Omani wooden sail ship Sohar sailed along the route taken by ancient Omani navigator Abu Obeida from the Omani capital Muscat to Guangzhou, Guangdong province. The journey lasted 231 days.

An Oman-funded monument commemorating the ship was erected in Guangzhou in 1995.

Guangzhou established a sister relationship with Dhofar, where Salalah is situated, in 2019.
