Envoy to attend Nigerian president's inauguration

Special Envoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Vice-Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Peng Qinghua will attend Nigerian President Bola Tinubu's inauguration ceremony in the capital Abuja on Monday, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning announced. The 71-year-old Tinubu won February's presidential election with 37 percent of the votes. Ties between China and Nigeria have developed smoothly since diplomatic ties were established in 1971. Nigeria is China's second-largest export market in Africa and its third-largest trade partner in the continent.

Nearly 40 killed in fresh clashes in northeast

Around 40 suspected militants and two police officers had died in fresh violence in Manipur in northeastern India, an official said on Sunday, confirming comments from the state authorities to local media. Manipur has been on edge after an explosion of interethnic violence this month killed at least 70 people and left tens of thousands displaced. Thousands of troops were deployed to restore order, while around 30,000 people fled their homes.

Thousands evacuated as Typhoon Mawar nears

Officials began evacuating thousands of villagers, shutting down schools and offices and imposed a no-sail ban on Monday as Typhoon Mawar approached the country's northern provinces. Although it is expected to slow down considerably, authorities warned of dangerous tidal surges, flash floods and landslides as it blows past the northernmost Batanes province from Tuesday to Wednesday. Mawar tore through Guam last week as the strongest typhoon to hit the region in over two decades.
