Former court official jailed for bribery
Meng Xiang, former chief of the enforcement bureau of the Supreme People's Court, China's top court, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for taking bribes of more than 22.7 million yuan ($3.3 million), a court in Henan province ruled on Tuesday. Meng was fined 2 million yuan at the same time, according to Zhengzhou Intermediate People's Court in Henan. From 2003 to 2020, Meng was found to have taken advantage of various work posts to assist departments and individuals in case handling, ruling enforcement, construction projects and personnel promotion, the Henan court said.
Over 170,000 relocated from geological hazards
More than 170,000 people in Gansu province have moved out of areas prone to geological disasters since last year as part of a relocation project, the provincial government said on Monday. Highly ecologically sensitive areas account for 12.1 percent of the province's land area, while areas prone to geological disasters account for more than half of the total. The provincial government has taken various measures to improve the lives of relocated people. Each relocated household is eligible to receive a subsidy of 100,000 yuan ($14,500) and an interest-free loan of up to 50,000 yuan.
