Green is the dominant theme of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022 — green design, green production, green recycling, green energy applications and green packaging.

Amid all that green is the green manufacturing of the mascot doll, which has won the hearts of young people. The doll aims to promote communication and cooperation between traditional manual workers and new manufacturing technologies.

A mascot doll needs to go through 12 processes — fabric inspection, cutting, compounding, embroidery, offset printing, digital printing, sewing, keel plugging, cotton filling, sealing, inspection and packaging.

It requires more delicate craftsmanship than ordinary dolls. For example, the offset printing needs to be stitched from point to point to ensure that the emblem is centered, said Wang Jiangtao, the person in charge of one of the licensed manufacturers for the Games.

Its fabric uses digital printing technology without any waste of water, gas or pulp, which is more energy-saving and environmentally friendly than traditional printing technology, Wang said.

The doll is cut by hand scissors and electric ones without any smoke, instead of traditional laser cutting. And unnecessary outer packaging is removed to save material.

In addition, the company uses green electricity, which is powered by photovoltaic power stations built on its roof, helping to achieve the goal of zero carbon emissions.

It is expected to generate about 300,000 kWh of green electricity every year and save about 88 tons of standard coal, reducing carbon emissions by about 220 tons, the equivalent of planting 12,000 trees.
