Yang Wenxian spoke directly to his bone cancer in his diary during treatment in Beijing in 2017:

"I might be defeated, but I might also defeat you. Even with a one in a billion chance, I would like to take the chance to be the winner."

Born and raised in Zhongjiang county of Sichuan province, Yang was diagnosed with bone cancer when he was a junior high student in 2014.

The disease has been painful, and it tortured him often.

"I sometimes would slap my head when my right leg hurt," Yang said. "When the pain continued, I would knock it against the wall to ease the pain."

He had to suspend his schoolwork for treatment.

In 2017, the situation worsened. He fell because of pain in the leg.

His family had already spent millions in treatment. With the sponsorship of relatives, close friends and others, Yang came to Beijing for treatment in June 2017. His right leg was amputated.
