Kyrgios ends ATP title drought in Washington

Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios won his seventh ATP title and first in three years by defeating Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka in Sunday's men's final at the Citi Open in Washington, DC.

The 27-year-old Australian downed 96th-ranked left-hander Nishioka 6-4, 6-3 for his first ATP title since capturing the 2019 Washington crown.

"It's emotional for me to be back here again and claim another title," Kyrgios said.

Kyrgios, who lost to Novak Djokovic last month in his first Grand Slam final, made back-to-back tour-level finals for the first time in his career and didn't allow a service break all week.

"It's just very emotional for me to see where I was at last year to now. It's just an incredible transformation," Kyrgios said. "I've been in some really dark places.

"There are so many people who have helped me get there but myself, I've shown some serious strength to just continue and just persevere and get through all those times and be able to still perform and win tournaments like this one."

Zagallo in good spirits following health scare

Iconic Brazilian player and coach Mario Zagallo was discharged from hospital on Sunday after a 12-day stay for a respiratory infection, a hospital source said. Zagallo, the first person to win the World Cup as both player and coach, will be able to celebrate his 91st birthday on Tuesday at home, after being admitted to intensive care at Rio de Janeiro's Barra D'Or hospital on July 26.

"After some difficult days, I'm 113 percent better," Zagallo posted on Instagram, where the "Old Wolf "has 116,000 followers.

"Thank you very much for all your support! Now you'll have to put up with me again!" he added, with a picture of himself flashing a thumbs-up.

As a forward, Zagallo was part of the Brazil sides that won the World Cup in 1958 and 1962 alongside Pele.

He was then coach for Brazil's 1970 title, assistant coach for the Selecao's victory in 1994, and coach again in 1998 when Brazil lost in the final to France.

The only others to win the World Cup as both player and coach are Germany's Franz Beckenbauer (1974 and 1990) and Didier Deschamps of France (1998 and 2018).

Lewandowski scores first Barcelona goal

Robert Lewandowski scored his first Barcelona goal in a 6-0 rout of Mexican side Pumas in the Joan Gamper Trophy preseason clash on Sunday.

On his Camp Nou bow, the Polish international, who switched from Bayern Munich in the summer, scored after three minutes from a particularly tight angle.

Pedri added the second and fourth goals in the fifth and 19th minutes, sandwiching a strike from Ousmane Dembele.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Frenkie de Jong completed the rout in the second half. Lewandowski also played a key part in Pedri's second goal with an inspired pass to set up the midfielder. Barcelona begins its La Liga campaign at home to Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.

Harvick ends long wait for NASCAR victory

Kevin Harvick ended a 65-race winless drought Sunday when he crossed the finish line first at the Firekeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan.

Harvick needed to win a race to grab a berth for the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, and he did just that, beating out pole-sitter Bubba Wallace by 2.903 seconds.

"Really proud of everybody on our (team)," the 46-year-old Harvick said. "Digging along all year long trying to make these Mustangs run faster. They haven't been great this year. But our guys are doing a good job in trying to take what we have, maximize it and do the things that we need to do."

Harvick led after 38 laps, but the key moment for his victory came late in the race during a caution. Ross Chastain and Christopher Bell collided, bringing out the yellow flag, and Harvick stayed out to take over the top spot.

Denny Hamlin made a push off the pit road, but one of his pit crew stepped onto the pit road, leading the driver to be penalized. Harvick took things from there.
