Apparent artillery shots fired, ROK says

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea on Sunday fired what appeared to be artillery shots, the Republic of Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The JCS said in a statement that it detected the trajectories, presumed to be the artillery shots fired from multiple rocket launchers, from about 6:21 pm to 6:37 pm local time. According to Yonhap News Agency, the ROK military spotted the trajectories of two DPRK artillery shots. On June 12, the DPRK fired around five shots from multiple rocket launchers off its west coast.

15 killed in bar shooting in Soweto, police say

A mass shooting at a tavern in Johannesburg's Soweto township has killed 15 people and left others in critical condition, according to police. Police say they are investigating reports that a group of men arrived in a minibus taxi and opened fire on some of the patrons at the bar shortly after midnight Sunday. Those injured have been taken to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. In a separate incident, four people were shot dead by unknown gunmen at a tavern in Sweetwaters township in the coastal city of Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night.

Crews contain huge fire in southern region

A massive fire that ravaged 650 hectares and forced people to evacuate in southern France has been brought under control, the fire service said on Saturday. Up to 950 firefighters backed by aircraft had been deployed in the southern Gard region, but the "critical phase" has now passed, fire service spokesman said. Like large swathes of the country, southeast France has suffered from drought this year, increasing the risk of fires.
