A multiple-unit train customized by CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles went into operation on March 30 in Guiyang – capital of Southwest China's Guizhou province – on China's first municipal loop-line express rail system, according to local media reports.

A multiple-unit train – more simply, a multiple unit or MU – is a self-propelled train comprising one or more carriages joined together. When coupled to another multiple unit they can be controlled by a single driver, with multiple-unit train control.

The loop-line in Guiyang consists of 17 stations and it takes 1 hour and 35 minutes to complete the 113-kilometer trip.

The Guiyang urban express railway has adopted a CRH3A-A multiple-unit train with 184 seats and can travel up to 200 kilometers per hour.

The loop-line is connected with Guiyang's metro lines, buses, railways and airports. This is expected to provide an efficient and convenient travel experience for locals and promote the coordinated development of Guiyang's districts and counties.

The train also incorporates the latest technology in the Fuxing EMU. An EMU is an electric multiple-unit train, consisting of self-propelled carriages, using electricity as the motive power.

For the first time, it applies cutting-edge technologies, such as big data, 5G communications, Beidou satellite positioning and Prognostics Health Management, in an intercity rail service.
