Biden gambles big on voting rights reform

US President Joe Biden took a major political gamble on Tuesday in calling for a break in the Senate's supermajority rule so that Democrats can override Republican opposition to voting rights reforms that he called crucial to saving US democracy. Biden challenged Democrats holding a razor-thin majority in the Senate to stand up for two bills that would expand access to polls and prevent practices that he said are being used to suppress black and other Democratic-leaning voters.

Poland ordered to pay fines over dispute

The EU's executive is set to demand that Poland pay around 70 million euros ($80 million) of fines in the coming weeks for failing to scrap a contentious system for disciplining judges, sources said. The dispute is one of many battles pitting Poland against the EU. Warsaw denies the charge. Tuesday was the deadline for Warsaw to tell the European Commission when and how it would dismantle the Disciplinary Chamber of Poland's Supreme Court, which the EU's top court had ordered suspended, or pay fines worth 1 million euros a day. Warsaw last week accused the EU of making "illegal demands" and said it would not give in to "blackmail".
