Parliament complex fire under control, again

A fire that ravaged South Africa's parliament has been contained after strong winds reignited the blaze, said firefighters on Tuesday. The fire began in the early hours on Sunday and devastated much of the parliament complex before it was declared under control on Monday morning. But strong winds reignited the blaze late in the afternoon. A 49-year-old man who had been arrested on Sunday inside the parliament building was to appear in court on Tuesday charged with "housebreaking, arson "and damaging state property. No casualties have been reported in the fire, but the damage to the nation's parliament has shocked the country.

Trump and children subpoenaed in probe

New York's top justice official has subpoenaed former president Donald Trump, his son Don Jr and daughter Ivanka in her investigation into the family's business dealings, a court filing showed on Monday. State Attorney General Letitia James issued the subpoenas last month seeking their testimonies in her yearslong civil probe. The filing came to light after The Washington Post reported in December that James had asked Trump to testify in person at her office this Friday. Monday's legal filing was the first time investigators also want to question Trump's two eldest children under oath.

Theranos founder guilty on multiple charges

In a case that exposed Silicon Valley's culture of hubris and hype, Elizabeth Holmes was convicted on Monday of duping investors into believing her startup Theranos had developed a revolutionary medical device that could detect a multitude of diseases and conditions from a few drops of blood. A jury convicted the 37-year-old Theranos founder on two counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit fraud after seven days of deliberation. The verdict followed a three-month trial featuring dozens of witnesses, including Holmes herself. She now faces up to 20 years in prison for each count, though legal experts said she is unlikely to receive the maximum sentence.
