Lenovo Group Ltd plans to devote 200 million yuan ($31.42 million) over the next three years to deepen cooperation with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, a premier university in China, in the three areas covering scientific research, talent training and new technology incubation.

The plan comes after a high-performance computing center named after Lenovo chairman and chief executive Yang Yuanqing was officially unveiled at the Tsung-Dao Lee Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University earlier this week.

Its high-performance computing system Siyuan-1 was built and delivered with a 100-million-yuan personal donation by Yang to his alma mater, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, in April to celebrate its 125th anniversary.

Though covering only 300 square meters, the center boasts a computing speed at 6 quadrillion times per second, ranking at the top among similar facilities in all Chinese universities and No. 132 in the top 500 high-performance computers around the world. It even exceeds those of Harvard, Cambridge and other famous international universities, according to Lenovo.

Yang said the gift is earmarked to help improve the university's computing capabilities, facilitate basic research and innovation, support the cultivation of talent, and help tackle common challenges faced by humanity.

Lenovo also inked a strategic deal with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The company plans to invest 100 million yuan into the research and development of new computing, new equipment, new materials and new energy in Shanghai Jiao Tong University as well as the talent training programs of the university.

Lenovo said another 100 million yuan will also be invested for the incubation of new technologies. Lenovo plans to set up a "Lenovo-Jiao Tong University Venture Fund" to provide incubation assistance, venture capital and employment support for Shanghai Jiao Tong University's entrepreneurial innovation projects through advanced market-oriented means.
