BERLIN - Former Schalke head coach Domenico Tedesco succeeds Jesse Marsch as new RB Leipzig head coach, the Bundesliga club announced in an official statement on Thursday.

The 36-year-old coach will return to the Bundesliga after putting pen to paper on a deal until June 2023. His co-assistants Andreas Hinkel and Max Urwantschky will also join the "Red Bulls". Interim coach Achim Beierlorzer and Leipzig mutually agreed to end the cooperation with immediate effect.

Tedesco stood at the sideline in Russia and trained Spartak since October 2019 before he announced he will not extend his contract in December 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He led the club on the 2nd spot which was their best result in four years.

Leipzig's new arrival knows the Bundesliga very well as he coached Schalke from 2017 until 2019. In his first season he was able to ensure a top-two finish with "Royal Blues". However, a negative run in March 2019 forced those responsible at Schalke to part company with Tedesco.

Leipzig will present its new coach in a digital press conference on Thursday afternoon.

The "Red Bulls", who dropped to the 11th position in the Bundesliga after suffering three straight defeats, clash with Borussia Monchengladbach at the 15th round on Saturday.
