Public transportation will play a bigger role in sustainable development, and more international cooperation is expected, industry experts said at the China International Public Transport conference in Beijing.

Themed as "Digitalization and Intelligence Transform the Mobility Landscape", the conference hopes to bring together the public transport stakeholders to get the whole picture of the sector, promoting the deep integration of new technologies, models, and materials with public transport, and constantly improving service through industrial innovation and transformation.

According to Cai Tuanjie, director of the Department of Transport Services, Ministry of Transport, more efforts will be taken to promote the development of new energy buses and the adoption of technologies to make the city’s public transportation run more efficiently. Meanwhile, more exploration will also be carried out in applying automatic driving techniques into the public transportation system.

For Mohammed Mezgani, secretary-general of International Association of Public Transport, or UITP, it is necessary to develop resilient cities that can handle potential crisis and provide more low-carbon transportation to improve the environment. He said more technology will be introduced to further improve the city transportation system.

Xu Zhengxiang, head of Strategy, Reform, and Development Department of Beijing Public Transport Corporation, said more international cooperation is expected with UITP.

"The conference will be a good platform to exchange global experience, and we are looking forward to more cooperation with UITP on the aspect of management and technology," said Xu.
