Officer killed in car ramming at Capitol

A Capitol Police officer was killed on Friday after a man rammed a car into two officers at a barricade outside the US Capitol and then emerged wielding a knife. It was the second line-of-duty death this year for a department still struggling to heal from the Jan 6 riot. Video shows the driver of the crashed car emerging with a knife in his hand and starting to run at the pair of officers, according to the police. Authorities shot the suspect, who died at a hospital. Police identified the slain officer as William "Billy "Evans, an 18-year veteran who was a member of the department's first responders unit. Police did not give the cause of his fatal injuries. They identified the suspect as 25-year-old Noah Green.

Protesters keep up the heat on police powers

Hundreds of people marched on Saturday through central London and other cities across England and Wales to protest the British government's plan to hand the police new powers to tackle demonstrations. The bill that upset demonstrators is going through Parliament. Under its terms, which cover England and Wales, police will be able to ban or shut down protests. Protesters included many who carried anti-sexism placards and chanted "Women scared everywhere, police and government do not care!". A recent protest against the new legislation in Bristol, southwest England, descended into widespread violence that saw police officers injured, a police station damaged and police vehicles torched.
