Former vice-mayor of Shanghai indicted
Gong Dao'an, former vice-mayor and police chief of Shanghai, has been indicted on a charge of taking bribes, the Supreme People's Procuratorate said on Monday. Gong was accused of taking advantage of his positions while working in Hubei province and Shanghai to seek illegitimate profits for others, and illegally accepting vast sums of money and gifts in return, it said in a statement. Gong's case has been investigated by the National Supervisory Commission, and a procuratorate in Tangshan, Hebei province, has reviewed the case and filed it in the Tangshan Intermediate People's Court, it added.

Platform to promote Shaoxing overseas
An English-language platform promoting culture and tourism in Shaoxing, a city in East China's Zhejiang province, was launched on Monday. Backed by China Daily's website and Shaoxing's culture, radio, television and tourism bureau, the platform,"Shaoxing, the very best of China", consists of pages and accounts on several overseas social media sites that will introduce the city's fascinating history and culture to the world. He Junjie, head of the bureau, announced that a "Year of Shaoxing" campaign will be launched on Wednesday. The emblem for Shaoxing as the Culture City of East Asia was also released on Monday.

Police officers seize nearly 34 kg of opium
Police in Southwest China's Yunnan province recently seized nearly 34 kilograms of opium and arrested a drug trafficking suspect, border police said on Monday. On March 26, police in Pu'er arrested one suspect and seized two bags of opium hidden in a roadside drainage pipe. Further investigation is underway. Yunnan is a major front in China's battle against drug crimes as it borders the Golden Triangle, which is known for its rampant drug production and trafficking.

Webinar gives people in UK true picture
China's embassy in the United Kingdom and the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region's government held a webinar on Friday that introduced developments in many aspects of Xinjiang and also debunked unfounded foreign accusations about the region. A short video clip introducing Xinjiang's natural scenery and achievements was broadcast during the webinar to help people in the UK understand the region better. Experts, religious figures and Xinjiang residents who attended the online event gave a comprehensive picture of Xinjiang's human rights protection and freedom of religion through statistics and case studies in response to questions.
