Peng Liyuan writes to German students

Peng Liyuan, the wife of President Xi Jinping, encouraged students from a German high school to visit and study in China after the COVID-19 pandemic to promote the friendship between Chinese and German people, especially the younger generations. Peng made the remark on Tuesday in a letter to students and teachers at Burg Grammar School in the German city of Essen. Peng praised the performance of four students from the school, who sang a Chinese-language song that expressed their hope that people around the world will win the battle against the pandemic at an early date. Peng visited the school when she accompanied Xi to Germany in March 2014. In 2016, a group of students and teachers from the school visited Beijing.

Top leader sets plan on economic development

Kim Jong-un, the top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, specified the direction of polices related to this year's economic development plan at a meeting on Tuesday, the official Korean Central News Agency reported on Wednesday. At the second plenary meeting of the eighth Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, Kim set forth tasks for different sectors, including economy and culture, and called for "enhancing the role of the state organs for economic guidance to carry them out," the report said. Kim also set tasks for the fishing sector to provide people with more marine products.

One dead, four hurt in health clinic shooting

A 67-year-old man unhappy with the healthcare he'd received opened fire at a clinic on Tuesday, killing one person and wounding four others, as bomb technicians investigated a suspicious device left there and others at a motel where he was staying, authorities said. All five victims were rushed to the hospital, and a hospital spokeswoman confirmed the one death on Tuesday night. The attack happened on Tuesday morning at a clinic in Buffalo, 64 kilometers northwest of Minneapolis. Authorities said Gregory Paul Ulrich opened fire at the facility and was arrested before noon.
