Even in the era before the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), the Chinese people had begun to carve jade using hand-made tools.
Some 3,000 years ago, the ancient Babylonians recorded the use of tools made of wood or stone.
In 1867, Tianjin opened the country's first modern machine bureau to research and manufacture large machines, including those for making tools.
Tianjin has taken the lead in modern times in equipment manufacturing, which remains an economic pillar.
China is one of the world's largest machine tool makers and importers.
