Liverpool go top while Bale goal puts Tottenham second

LONDON -- Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League this weekend thanks to their home win to West Ham United on Saturday and Everton's 2-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday.

Diogo Jota's 85th minute goal completed Liverpool's fightback from a goal down at home to West Ham United, who had taken the lead after Pablo Fornals capitalized on a poor clearance from Jose Gomez.

Mohamed Salah equalized from the penalty spot three minutes before the break and Jota scored the winner five minutes from time after an excellent pass from Xherdan Shaqiri.

Jota, who had earlier seen a goal ruled out by the VAR, has now scored in his first three home games since joining from Wolves, while Liverpool equal a club record of 63 league games unbeaten at Anfield.

Everton travelled to St James' Park knowing a win would see them leapfrog their neighbors, but a side missing Lucas Digne, Richarlison, James Rodriguez and Seamus Coleman lacked cohesion, and Newcastle were worthy winners thanks to two goals from Callum Wilson.

The former Bournemouth striker scored his first from the penalty spot after being fouled by Andre Gomes and his second came in the 89th minute after a swift counter-attack.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin pulled a goal back for Everton a minute later but Carlo Ancelotti's men ran out of time to find an equalizer.

Gareth Bale scored his first goal since returning from Real Madrid to give Tottenham a 2-1 win at home to Brighton that lifts them up to second.

Harry Kane put Tottenham ahead with a 13th minute penalty and although Tariq Lamptey equalized in the 53rd minute after a VAR check, Bale's goal from a Sergio Reguilon pass sealed the win.

Pierre Emerick Aubameyang's 69th minute penalty after Paul Pogba's clumsy challenge on Hector Bellerin saw Arsenal win 1-0 away to Manchester United, ending his side's run of 29 games without an away win against a 'big-six' rival and leaving United without a home win in the league this season.

Southampton moved into the top four after an excellent first half performance helped them to a 4-3 win away to Aston Villa in Sunday's first game.

James Ward-Prowse netted twice after Jannik Vestergaard's 20th minute opening goal and although Tyrone Mings' 63rd minute header gave Villa hope, Danny Ings' goal put Southampton out of sight even though injury time goals from Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish put some makeup on the final score.

Kyle Walker's 28th minute goal from long range against his former club was enough to give Manchester City a 1-0 win away to Sheffield United on Saturday lunchtime.

Sheffield keeper Aaron Ramsdale kept his side in the game in the first half and the home side came close to sneaking an equalizer 20 minutes from the end when John Lundstram hit their best chance of the game just over the bar.

Chelsea continued to improve and goals from Hakim Ziyech, Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner saw them cruise past bottom of the table Burnley.

New Chelsea keeper Edouard Mendy has now conceded just one goal in six appearances and was hardly tested.

Friday night saw first half goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and Daniel Podence give Wolves a 2-0 win at home to Crystal Palace, who ended with 10 men after a late red card for Luka Milivojevic.
