Mayor of Madrid offers city to host Champions League final

MADRID - Mayor of Madrid Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida on Tuesday said that the city was working to host this season's Champions League final in the city.
The 2019 Champions League Final was held in Madrid, and with this season's competition disrupted by the coronavirus along with UEFA still deciding how to finish the tournament, Almeida believes Madrid could once again play host.
"I want to show my total support for the Champions League final to be played in Madrid," said Almeida on Spanish TV network 13TV.
Last season's final was played in the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium between Liverpool and Tottenham, but the city also has Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.
"We have the correct security conditions, we have the infrastructure and the public services that would allow us to host the final and it would also be a message to the world that in spite of the drama that we have gone through, Madrid will not give in and has returned," he said.
UEFA are expected to confirm their plans for the final stages of the Champions League and Europa League on June 17th.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, Consumer Affairs and Social Services, Madrid has suffered almost 70,000 cases of Covid-19, with 717 new cases reported in the past seven days. Meanwhile almost 8,700 people have lost their lives to the virus in the region.
