Record number of runners sign up for Shanghai Marathon

A total of 155,370 runners have registered for 2019 Shanghai International Marathon, which closed its registration on Monday.

According to the event organizer, more than 100,000 people signed up for the event on the first day of the registration window, setting a record.

The annual marathon, which will take place in Shanghai on Nov 17, can only accommodate 38,000 contestants. Organizers have also allocated 500 spots for donor entries, 457 of which have been taken.

A ballot will be held to select the final contestants for the marathon and the result will be announced on Aug 23.
